Last year, PS 29 earned nearly $200 via families bringing in their used laser cartridges for responsible recycling by Cartridge World. Parent Gina Stormont is heading up this effort once again this year. There is a drop box, identical to the one pictured here, in the school lobby right beside the main stairs. Please help the environment and support the school at the same time!
Here are some good reasons for pitching in:
- About 8 cartridges are thrown away in the United States every second.
- Every cartridge re-used is one less cartridge thrown into our landfills.
- It takes about a gallon of oil to make a new laser cartridge.
- In North America alone, over 350 million cartridges per year are discarded in our landfills, and that number increases by 12 percent annually!
- Every re-manufactured cartridge saves nearly 3 and 1/2 pounds of solid waste from being deposited in landfills.
- Re-manufacturing cartridges reduces pollution. Almost 90% of empty cartridges are incinerated or dumped in landfills.
- 70% of used printer cartridges throughout the world are currently being thrown out.
