FREE Family Art Workshops at MoMA This Fall

On weekends this fall, there will be several FREE Ford family art workshops at MoMA. Signups take place the second week of September, and workshops get sold out quickly, due to their small sizes. To make sure you get a spot, the museum recommends signing up for their e-newsletter to be notified when registration begins.

Final Family Arts Workshop This Evening: Experience the Arts As Your Child Does!

The Center for Arts Education and the PS 29 Parents and Teachers Association are pleased to present the final Parents as Arts Partners Family Workshop this evening, Wednesday, June 18th! The enrolled families will be learning about Islamic Patterning, Design and Culture with Tunisian artist Emna Zghal. This event takes place in tandem with Ms. Zghal's in-school residency this week in Kristen Adamczyk's art studio. Ms. Zhgal's residency is the culminating week in a three-part residency series via PS 29's 2007-2008 collaboration with City Lore.

Take the Kids for a Stroll to See Windows Brooklyn!

Windows Brooklyn is an art exhibition installed through June 22 in numerous storefront windows along Court Street and Smith Street. The exhibition takes art out of the traditional museum or gallery setting and into public space, turning independent business owners into collaborators willing to exchange commerce for culture.

Fool's Academy Visits PS 29 to Present "Grammar...Mysterious"!

Fool's Academy, a circus-arts theatre company that combines fun and learning, paid a special visit to PS 29 today, presenting Grammar... Mysterious, a show tailored to grades 1-4. Grammar...Mysterious helps elementary school kids navigate the complex worlds of grammar using a blend of language arts, circus arts, and theatre, and the children loved it! Ask them what they remember about identifying the parts of speech!

Tickets On Sale for Vital Theatre's The Bully! One-Hour Show This Friday!

Get your tickets now for Vital Theatre's production of The Bully, an original musical for children. The one-hour show, which the New York Times called "witty" and "hilarious," will be performed at PS 29 one time only, this Friday, March 28th at 6:30 PM in the auditorium. Tickets are $10. The Bully tells the story of Lenny, the smartest kid in school. Unfortunately he is not necessarily the strongest kid and he is constantly picked on by Steve, the school bully. A bus mix up leaves the two boys stranded at the wrong school where they both get picked on for being the “new kids.”

Taunted by the terrifying “Mega,” the boys learn what life is really like for the other and are forced to work together in order to get back to their own school. In the end they make the realization that they might not be so different after all.Reviewing "The Bully," the New York Times said, "A peppy score and lyrics...an insightful book. 'The Bully,' like the best kind of teacher, nudges children toward the truth and then lets them discover it on their own."

Nigerian Textile Designer Foly Kolade Is PS 29 Artist In Residence; CAE PAAP Workshop Is Tuesday!

PS 29's second 2007-2008 artist-in-residence is Foly Kolade, a Nigerian singer, designer and percussionist, who will teach Nigerian textile arts through Friday in art teacher Kristen Adamczyk's classes. This residency series is made possible by a PS 29 arts partnership with City Lore, a nonprofit organization that produces programs that convey New York City's rich cultural heritage.

On Tuesday evening, at a Center for Arts Education Parents As Arts Partners workshop, parents will have a unique hands-on opportunity to share in their children's creative explorations with Mr. Kolade. (The workshop, made possible by a Center for Arts Education PAAP grant, is at capacity, and the wait list is long. Please watch for news soon of the third PAAP workshop, if you have not yet participated in the series!)

The video here is of Mr. Kolade's high-voltage Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble, which blends rock, funk, jazz and West African rhythms. Mr. Kolade's residency also coincides with the start this week of the 3rd grade's in-school BAM African Dance Beat and Music Beat residencies.

Not on the Test!

Here's a video for the song, Not on the Test, which PS 8 alum Tom Chapin wrote with John Forster. The two wrote the song to express their disappointment in the lack of arts education in public schools. Though PS 29 is graced with robust arts programming, the Mayor's current squeeze on all schools makes this lament hit closer to home. Tom, now how 'bout a "Ballad of the Budget Cut" for Wednesday's protest rally at City Hall?

Nouveau bluegrass band Astrograss, featuring former PS 29 teacher Jordan Shapiro (pictured center on Columbia St.), celebrates the brand-new CD, Let Me Stay Up All Night, with a release party at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater this Sunday, March 9th at 12 noon!
