All sorts of home-made and store-bought goodies will be available at the sale, in addition to coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Please remember to bake or buy something! All baked goods should be delivered to the school as early as possible. Alternatively, you can leave your donation on the table in the back of the auditorium on Monday afternoon.
The Food and Farming Initiative is pleased to offer you again this year the opportunity to purchase fresh eggs from free-range, pastured hens raised on a Dutchess County farm. The eggs are delivered straight to our school, every other week, beginning next Monday (see full schedule below.)
Eggs will be delivered to PS 29 from Tello's Green Farm approximately twice a month (see schedule below) and be ready for pickup at 8:30 a.m. on the designated day in the Family Room. All you have to do is send in the attached order form with a check pre-paying for your total order of eggs and show up to pick up your eggs on the distribution day. The eggs are sold by the dozen for $3.50.
What do free-range eggs have to do with PS 29? PS 29 is interested in promoting better physical and mental health within our school community. Eating healthy foods goes a long way towards optimal health. Free range eggs can be expensive in local grocery stores. Yet the benefits to us and our children are numerous. Most notably free-range eggs generally do not contain hormones, steroids and antibiotics often found in eggs from chickens raised in confinement and fed conventional grain. Free-range eggs contain higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown to have positive effects on brain development and heart health.
How and when do I sign up? Click and fill in the attached form and e-mail it to Alison Cohen or place it in the PS 29 PTA mailbox in the school office. Please put “PS 29 eggs” on the outside of a sealed envelope. Don’t forget to include a check made out to Tello's Green Farm (NOT TO PS 29 PTA; this is a community service, not a fundraiser!). Enrollment is ongoing! The first delivery of eggs for the 2008-2009 school year will take place next Monday, November 3rd. Please order and pay in advance for your full order. PS 29 teachers and staff members gathered today in the library/media center (Room 408) for training sessions for our new, soon-to-be-launched, SchoolHub website, a much more dynamic and user-friendly tool than our present site. The sessions were presented by Paul Kogan, founder and chief executive officer of SchoolHub, and PS 29 parent Neil Wehrle, who together have made the new site possible. Special thanks to Nina Chan Jalowayski and Jessica Delaney for the delicious home-made meal for the teachers!

The Foundation for Healthy Living has selected PS 29 for participation in its Kids Are Runners Too! program. Kids Are Runners Too! is a five-week running/walking school-based program designed to give children the opportunity to increase their daily levels of physical activity with an emphasis on proper hydration and nutrition. Children in grades K-5 will run/walk during PE, recess, and at home with their families. All children will receive a pedometer, water bottle and gold medal at the completion of the five-week program, which begins on October 27th. NYC Council members Letitia James and Bill de Blasio, in conjunction with the Alliance for Quality Education & The NYC Coalition for Educational Justice, have invited the PS 29 PTA to join in the formation of a Special Task Force aimed at getting parents more say in how Department of Education decisions are made, in the face of Mayoral control being up for reauthorization next year. Dear P.S. 29 Families,
We’d like to invite you to a very special concert on Saturday, November 1st at 4 PM, at the Belorussian Church at Atlantic Avenue and Bond Street! Our very own Music Partners Band teachers are putting on a benefit concert for one of P.S. 29's sister schools, PS 89 in East New York, to raise funds to keep their music program alive and well. P.S. 89 has a band program very much like P.S. 29's – but they’ve encountered such extreme financial difficulties that they are facing the possibility of having to terminate their long-standing commitment to music education in their school.
The Brooklyn Conservatory and P.S. 89 are working together to raise money to keep this music program running through the end of the current school year and beyond. Can you help our sister school to provide music classes for its children? We know what a difference these classes make to our own students, and so we understand how important it is that all NYC schoolchildren have arts education!

Wednesday October 15th (by 11:59 PM) is the deadline to make public comments to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the 2009 Reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Programs and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). This is the regulation for the school meal programs.
Ask that a plant-based entrée, free of artificial ingredients and animal ingredients, be required on the menu each day, and that peanut butter and jelly or a bagel and margarine, or other such items.
Ask that artificial ingredients not be allowed: no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sweeteners, or transfats.
Ask that the food contain no partially hydrogenated oils.
Ask that the focus be on fresh and unprocessed, or minimally processed foods.
Ask that non-dairy calcium fortified beverages be available to all students.
Ask that the USDA stop supplying red meat as part of the commodity program.
Finally, ask for more funding. The amount of money that schools have to actually spend on food for lunch is just 90 cents per student. The rest of the money goes to labor and overhead. Out of that 90 cents, 20 cents comes in the form of commodity foods. In New York State, the top 4 commodity foods are: beef, chicken, cheese, and white potato products.
Our 4th graders are headed to the Borough Hall Greenmarket tomorrow morning, Tuesday, October 14th, for the second week of their "Days of Taste" program, which brings ingredients from local chefs and farms into the classrooms. Last week, the 4th grade classrooms were individually visited by some amazing chefs from Bocca Lupo, The Ritz-Carlton New York, Cafe on Clinton and New York City College of Technology's Department of Hospitality Management.
The Borough President, Marty Markowitz, wants to know what our issues, concerns and responses are to the crisis at Long Island College Hospital (LICH). His office has scheduled a press conference and rally focusing on us. He wants to hear what we think about the future of LICH. PS 29 and the Cobble Hill Association both have new Green committees, which are partnering for our first joint community-wide eco-initiative: an Electronics Recycling Drive on Saturday, November 1st in our schoolyard. The event will be staffed and organized by the Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC). The LESEC has become adept at larger-scale recycling efforts, partnering with organizations all over the city to make really significant dents in the city's waste stream.
A sealed cargo container will be placed in the schoolyard and kids, parents, and community residents will be able to drop off computers, printers, batteries and more. The LESEC cares very passionately about post-event clean up too and makes sure to leave no trace behind.
Please save the date and set aside your unwanted electronics. Keep them out of landfills! Spread the word!
Picture Day, Friday, October 24th, is only two weeks away! Look for order forms in backpacks this Friday, October 10th. The PTA is once again working with Irvin Simon Photography, which both donates a percentage back to the school, and supports our fundraising auction.

ATTENTION 5TH GRADE FAMILIES: For consistency in the 5th Grade Yearbook, we request that all 5th grade photo orders select the BLUE background. Also, please note that if you do not select a background, you will automatically receive a blue background.
Please send your child with any grooming items that you think necessary, such as brush, comb, gel, etc. This will help minimize the process of retakes. This school year, retake day will take place in January. On that day, students whose photos have a technical flaw or who were absent will have a chance to be photographed. Due to the overly complex logistics, there will be no sibling photo option this year.

The Yard is once again hosting a day of farm fresh food, live music, local vendors, delicious brews and other triumphs of sustainable urban living. Last year, over 1,000 people flocked to the banks of the Gowanus Canal. This year, with pony-rides, arts and crafts, pumpkin carving, pie bake-offs, urban chickens, raffle prizes, composting, transportation alternatives, voter education, and tons of surprises...it will be a day to remember. Please take a moment to sign this petition to put the pre-k admissions process back in the hands of the schools. When the DoE centralized pre-k admissions last spring, lots of mistakes were made. PS 29 families were affected - and Melanie, staff members, and several families were forced to battle through DoE red tape to make sure that PS 29 siblings who were mistakenly denied preference received pre-k seats after all.
Let's see that we don't have this headache (not to mention heartache) again! Even if your own kids are past the pre-k process, none of us want to see our school administrators' time diverted away from our classrooms!!
With clouds giving way to sun, we lucked out for our tables at the Atlantic Antic today! PS 29 and neighborhood families kept our area jammed to capacity throughout the day. The kids had a great time, and the PTA earned $800 in profit!
Special thanks to Kathleen Cavalaro, with Providence Hogan, for co-chairing the event. Many families baked and donated dozens of cupcakes for the ever-popular cupcake decorating activity, and kids kept the face painting area bustling. One-of-a-kind necklaces were created specially for the event by Kathleen Cavalaro, who donated 100% of the proceeds. PS 29 merchandise (caps, tees, jackets, and canvas totes) and our own PS 29 fair-trade coffee also were bestsellers. Thanks to all of our families for the great turnout!
Save the date for the Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour (A.G.A.S.T.)!!
You're invited to the 12th Annual A.G.A.S.T. tour on Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19, 2008 from 1-6 p.m. Visitors to this free and open-to-the public tour have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with the creators of photography, drawing, printmaking, mixed-media, video, ceramics, glass, installation, paintings, and sculpture, in their own working studio environment.
Bonnie Steinsnyder, the late Zander Toulouse's mom, will be among the many artists at the Open Studio Tour. Her studio is located at 267 Douglass Street, between 3rd Avenue and Nevins Street, on the 4th floor. Check out Bonnie's site.

On Monday, October 6th at 4 PM at the new season of Big Movies for Little Kids at Cobble Hill Cinemas: After several cowboys fail, a young boy tames a beautiful white horse in White Mane, part of a double bill of enchanting, recently restored French films about children. In The Red Balloon, a boy spends a magical afternoon chasing a red balloon across Paris. Albert Lamorisse directed this charming story and cast his 6-year-old son Pascal in the lead role, creating a memorable fable about friendship and loss. (1953, Total Running Time: 74 minutes.) This year, PS 29's table will be in the heart of the action, on Atlantic Avenue between Smith and Hoyt Streets, right by Providence Day Spa. Please visit our table for fun activities, such as face painting, cupcake decorating and more! Our Antic table is a fun way to raise needed funds for the PTA, which in turn supports teaching assistants, collaborations with cultural institutions, and learning materials and supplies.
About the Antic: Spanning 10 blocks of Atlantic Avenue, from 4th Avenue in Boerum Hill all the way to Hicks Street in Cobble Hill/Brooklyn Heights, the Atlantic Antic is New York's top street festival, offering something for everyone! Best known for its eclectic delicacies, the Antic features an exciting array of foods from around the world, from baklava and funnel cake, to grilled sardines and pulled pork sandwiches, to street fair favorites like fresh lemonade, fried mozzarella, and roasted corn. Ten live musical stages offer FREE performances all day, featuring blues, rock, country, R&B, jazz and lots of music for kids.
Following this morning's first Parents As Learning Partners event of 2008-2009, the turnout was terrific for the Scholastic Book Fair Parents Pre-Sale. The fresh-baked homemade coffee cake, banana and pumpkin breads - graciously donated by A Little Something By Nina - were decidedly NCLB (No Crumbs Left Behind)!

Family Shopping Hours tomorrow, Saturday, October 4th, are from 8:30-3:30 PM.
Teachers visited the fair yesterday to create their own classroom wish lists, which are posted on the walls beside the fair cashier's desk.

The Scholastic Book Fair is up and running and the selection is amazing and bigger than ever!! Teachers came for the Faculty Sneak Peek this afternoon to browse and create wish lists. Thanks to Marquet Patisserie for graciously donating the tray of lovely cookies for our faculty!!
Tomorrow please come and shop at the fair after Families As Reading Partners. We'll have coffee, tea and home-baked coffee cake and other goodies (donated by A Little Something By Nina).
Last year, PS 29 earned nearly $200 via families bringing in their used laser cartridges for responsible recycling by Cartridge World. Parent Gina Stormont is heading up this effort once again this year. There is a drop box, identical to the one pictured here, in the school lobby right beside the main stairs. Please help the environment and support the school at the same time!
Here are some good reasons for pitching in:
About 8 cartridges are thrown away in the United States every second.
Every cartridge re-used is one less cartridge thrown into our landfills.
It takes about a gallon of oil to make a new laser cartridge.
In North America alone, over 350 million cartridges per year are discarded in our landfills, and that number increases by 12 percent annually!
Every re-manufactured cartridge saves nearly 3 and 1/2 pounds of solid waste from being deposited in landfills.
Re-manufacturing cartridges reduces pollution. Almost 90% of empty cartridges are incinerated or dumped in landfills.
70% of used printer cartridges throughout the world are currently being thrown out.
Please get in touch with Jeanmarie Giordano, co-chair of the Scholastic Book Fair, to volunteer your time at the fair, if you haven't yet had the chance to do so. It takes a lot of helping hands to stage the book fair, which has become a vital PS 29 institution that helps forge in our kids a life-long love of reading. We raise funds through the fair to support our other literacy efforts; earn lots of books for our library; and, most significantly, help make finding just-right books really fun for the kids.
Parents of children new to the school are encouraged to volunteer for the fair; it's a great starting point for involvement!
Your support can take a variety of forms: volunteering your time, sending your child in with a few dollars to buy a book on his/her class shopping day, and making your own shopping visit to the fair. Please take a few minutes to stop by for refreshments and browse the selection as an apt follow-up to this Friday's Families As Reading Partners (in your child's classroom, 8:30-9:10 AM). The fair takes place in the outer cafeteria - and we look forward to seeing you there!

Our 4th graders are headed to the Borough Hall Greenmarket tomorrow morning, Tuesday, October 14th, for the second week of their "Days of Taste" program, which brings ingredients from local chefs and farms into the classrooms. Last week, the 4th grade classrooms were individually visited by some amazing chefs from Bocca Lupo, The Ritz-Carlton New York, Cafe on Clinton and New York City College of Technology's Department of Hospitality Management.

PS 29 and the Cobble Hill Association both have new Green committees, which are partnering for our first joint community-wide eco-initiative: an Electronics Recycling Drive on Saturday, November 1st in our schoolyard. The event will be staffed and organized by the Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC). The LESEC has become adept at larger-scale recycling efforts, partnering with organizations all over the city to make really significant dents in the city's waste stream.
