The PS 29 PTA is pleased to announced that we have joined Recycling for Charities, a program that allows you to donate your old cell phone, PDA, digital camera, or iPod to be recycled while benefiting the PS 29 PTA!! It's extremely easy - we now have a Drop Box in the main lobby at school! Take advantage of upcoming school events - tonight's PTA General Meeting (5/28), the Block Party on Friday (5/30), the Arts Event next Tuesday (6/3), or the Tag Sale (6/7) - to responsibly recycle these items and raise money for the school!
Why is wireless recycling so important? To begin, consider these alarming figures:
- Since the year 2002, an average of over 200 million cell phones per year have gone out of service, despite having remaining economic value.
- By the end of this year, there will be approximately 550 million unused mobile and wireless phones stockpiled in the United States awaiting proper disposal. That number is expected to grow by upward of 175 million in each of the following years.
- Of all the phones that go out of service, less than 8% are recycled or refurbished.
Depending on the model and condition of each item, Recycling for Charities will donate to the PS 29 PTA a % of market value for every item to be refurbished, and a flat donation amount for every item that is recycled.
By using our new Drop Box, you are helping to control the global threat of accumulating electronic waste, and therefore helping your children. By refurbishing or recycling the donations that Recycling for Charities collects, everyone helps keep electronic waste out of landfills and toxic elements out of the environment. It's also tax deductible. If you donate an item in the drop box, you can print your own tax receipt. Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions to calculate the value of your donation.
