Giving Thanks for What We Have at PS 29!

Before we all take off in different directions for the break, please remember that donations to the PS 29 Annual Appeal can now be made online via credit card, in any amount ranging from $5 up. 4 Items Away from Earning 7% on Amazon School Rewards Purchases!

The PS 29 community has been wonderful about using our Amazon School Rewards program this month! As of today, we are only four orders away from raising our performance-based commission from 6.5% to 7% for December! Seven percent is an extremely healthy sales commission, and School Rewards is an effortless way for us to raise year-round funds for school while we shop on Amazon for books, toys, DVDs, groceries, gourmet food, jewelry/watches, electronics, and literally millions of products.

Meanwhile, since very recently launching the GoodSearch/GoodShop program, there already have been over 100 Internet searches through GoodSearch.com — the PTA earns a penny per search! — as well as purchases through GoodShop.com, an online shopping mall which donates an average of 3% (and up to 37%) on purchases from hundreds of participating vendors, including Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Apple Store, iTunes, Sephora, and the Gap.

Let's Stop Lice at PS 29!! PTA Seminar on Tuesday, December 18th at 8:30 AM

Please join the PS 29 PTA on Tuesday, December 18th immediately following drop off, from 8:30-9:30 AM, in the auditorium for a seminar on preventing, identifying and treating headlice.

Lice Consultant Shayna Brown—The Lady Bug—will be on hand to educate parents on how headlice is spread, how to identify and treat headlice effectively and how to proactively avoid an infestation. (Our focus will be on non-chemical treatments.)

Unfortunately, this year the number of headlice cases at PS 29 has reached unprecedented numbers. Dealing with headlice is physically and emotionally exhausting, time-consuming, and expensive (treatments, laundry, missed work). Let's join together as a community to fight this problem.

If you have not had to deal with headlice before please join us so you are well informed and prepared; if you have already dealt with headlice please join us to make sure you have the best information in hand.

Our goal is a lice-free 2008!!!"

Big Movies for Little Kids Features Knuffle Bunny and Prince Achmed

On Monday, December 17th at 4 PM, The Big Movies for Little Kids Series at Cobble Hill Cinemas features The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) with special preview screening of Knuffle Bunny (2006). (Total Running Time: 76 minutes.)

In Knuffle Bunny, Trixie, Daddy and Knuffle Bunny take a trip to the neighborhood laundromat, but their exciting adventure takes an unexpected turn when Trixie realizes something is missing. Narrated by author Mo Willems and his real-life daughter, Trixie.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed was the first feature-length animated film ever made and is based on stories from The Arabian Nights. A wicked sorcerer tricks Prince Achmed into riding a magical flying horse. The heroic prince is able to subdue the magical horse, which he uses to fly off to many adventures. While travelling, he falls in love with the beautiful Princess Peri Banu, and must defeat an army of demons to win her heart. The entire film is animated using the silhouette technique, which employs movable cardboard and metal cutouts posed in front of illuminated sheets of glass. (Admission: $6.50 per person.)

Meghan McCarthy Reads From Strong Man at The Strand

Author, illustrator, and Brooklynite Meghan McCarthy reads this afternoon, Saturday, December 15th, from her picture book, Strong Man: The Story of Charles Atlas, an illustrated biography of the famed 98-pound weakling's transformation into the "World's Most Perfectly Developed Man." East Meets West Holiday Parade, Saturday, December 15th

The Little Italy Merchants Association promises the "biggest holiday parade ever in Lower Manhattan" on Saturday, December 14th from 2-4 PM, celebrating unity between Little Italy and Chinatown. The parade features floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dancers, acrobats, singers, and jugglers. The parade starts at Mulberry & Worth Sts., heads north on Mulberry to Houston, south on Mott from Houston to Worth, ending at Chatham (Kimlau) Square. FREE.

Pinkalicious Packs the House!

Last Friday evening's performance of Vital Theatre's Pinkalicious the Musical was a resounding success, with 400 tickets sold, $400 worth of cupcakes and beverages consumed, and a net gain for the school of $2,875!!! The kids, who packed the auditorium in a sea of pink, eagerly participated in the post-show Q&A with the cast and, of course, the Cupcake Social, where tables brimmed with pink and green treats.

Many volunteers stepped up to make the evening a huge hit, from ticket and cupcake sellers to bakers, program folders, and lots of others. The PTA sends a special, enormous thank-you to event organizer Nina Chan Jalowayski, who made the evening possible!

Don't Be a Scrooge — Celebrate the Holidays at the Morgan!

Join The Morgan Library & Museum for its annual family celebration today, Sunday, December 9th from 2 to 5 p.m., celebrating the exhibitions Charles Dickens's Christmas Carol and Painted with Words: Vincent van Gogh's Letters to Émile Bernard.

Activities include a paper doll art workshop of Victorian fashions, cotillion dancing with live music, and a marionette show of Winter Fairy Tales by the Czechoslovak American Marionette Theatre. Meet costumed characters Vincent van Gogh, Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present too!

All events are included with admission to the museum ($12 adults, kids under 12 free). The museum is located at Madison Avenue and E. 36th Street. Schoolwide Read Aloud Book, One Grain of Rice

The kids recently took to heart the lessons of the schoolwide read-aloud book, One Grain of Rice: A Mathematical Folktale, in which a resourceful village girl outsmarts a greedy raja, turning a reward of one grain of rice into a feast for a hungry nation. The City Harvest food drive, held concurrently with the Rice read-aloud, doubled last year's success, bringing in a whopping 2,000 pounds of food to feed New York City's hungry!

Christ Church Cobble Hill and Linden Tree Preschool cordially invite all to their eighteenth Annual St. Nicholas Faire on Saturday, December 8th, 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, at 26 Clinton Street (corner of Kane Street). NYC Council Hearing on Progress Reports Next Monday; Petition Deadline Is Friday!

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE PS 29 SLT AND PTA!

Robert Jackson, Chair of the City Council Education Committee, will oversee a public hearing on the Progress Reports for Schools (otherwise known as the school report cards) this coming Monday, December 10th at 9:30 a.m. in the Council Chambers, City Hall.

This is our one and only chance to deliver our petitions to the DOE with the media in attendance. The DOE will present first and council members will question them. Then it will be the parents' turn.

If you can, please plan to spend the morning at City Hall so your voice can be heard. Time Out From Testing—a statewide coalition of parent, educator, business, community, and civil rights organizations in New York State committed to a "time-out" from excessive and high stakes exams—is hoping to pack the Chambers and show the DOE that parents must be heard!

Volunteers Needed for Pinkalicious the Musical, This Friday Evening!

Calling all volunteers for this Friday evening's eagerly anticipated performance of Vital Theatre Company's Pinkalicious the Musical!

If you can help out, please contact event organizer Nina Chan Jalowayski, 646.812.0184! We already have all the bakers we need for our cupcake sale, but really could use more volunteers for the evening itself, so please get in touch!!

The PTA sends huge thanks to our generous pals at Met Food for the ultra-sweet donation of two cases (24 boxes!) of Duncan Hines devil's food and yellow cake mixes, 10 boxes of confectioner's sugar and 500 muffin cups (10x50 packs)!

Enormous thanks also go to our drama teacher, Cynthia Blackwell, for introducing Pinkalicious, the book, to her classes this week! Both Pinkalicious and the brand-new Purplicious books will be available for purchase at the event (a percentage goes to the PTA)!

PS 29 Families Volunteer at New York City Marathon!

The PS 29 community turned out in force to run an Aid Station at last month's New York City Marathon. Kids, parents, and physical education teacher Kathy Nobles all worked hard to deliver much needed support, encouragement and Gatorade to the marathoners! It takes thousands of volunteers to make the race happen, and our kids' efforts lent an extra bounce to the runners' steps! Thanks to all the families who came out to celebrate fitness and running!
