PS 29 parent and American Foundation for the Blind archivist Helen Selsdon has donated a VIP tour of the Helen Keller Archives, the AFB Rare Books Collection and Talking Book Studios. The Archives are not open to the general public, so this is a unique chance to view personal papers, artifacts and photos donated to the AFB by Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan.
The story of how Sullivan broke through the isolation imposed by Keller's near complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become known worldwide through the dramatic depictions of The Miracle Worker. What is less well known is how Keller's life developed after she completed her education. A prolific author, she was well traveled, and was outspoken in her opposition to war. She campaigned for women's suffrage, workers' rights and socialism, as well as many other progressive causes.
